The story is a flashback in fact with some very clever flash-forwards to Inspector O’s de-briefing with a British spook. If you like your thrillers to be tense and nervewracking, this will do quite nicely. The men who conspired to kill his father are either dead or disappeared.

The feeling extends into the writing which can make the book hard to read. The novel follows Inspector O as he recounts his story of tne the plot behind a series of events he unwittingly finds himself in.

This was one of those books that starts out as a mystery and finishes Mediocre North Korean mystery! First off, the mystery itself–though witty and entertaining–isn’t as tight as I would have liked it to be. North Korea’s leaders are desperate to hunt down and eliminate anyone who knows too much about a series of decades-old kidnappings and murders–and Inspector O discovers too late he has been sent into the chaos.

Nobody puts down their foot twice in the same place. Church is a great author and Chin seems like a good narrator, but whoever matched these two up needs to find another line of work.
