Also could be a disk space issue–where are you exporting the pdf to and does that drive have adequate space? Not enough memory What are some general output issues and solutions when working with ArcInfo Workstation? Having too many feature- crqshes label- weights set to High can cause excessive resource consumption on output.
There’s an option to adjust the output raster buffer size that might help. Can you post your code? Anyone have a solution to this? How can we improve? Also set label weights to low for every layer that is not critical to the map.
Can you export other data using DDP without getting the crash? Also, take a look at task manager while the running the exporring. If it goes over 2 GB you are running out of memory. Please try again in a few minutes.

If this exported raster dataset is brought back into ArcGIS, the stretched type should be set to None, since it is already stretched.
I have had this same issue with the same steps you described. Cause Most likely you are running out of disk space. You can’t close down the ‘grey export box’ clicking doesn’t close it down and it is continuously displayed. Others have found a complete profile rebuild helps, but that’s an awfully big stick. If the output exporing is a geodatabase, the output type will automatically be the correct geodatabase type.
